In U.S., there are different ecosystems being built in different areas, such as Silicon Valley, a mecca for startups where an advanced ecosystem has been built, Boston, where the world's leading academic and research institutions are concentrated and is strong in the fields of biotechnology and life sciences and New York, a city at the forefront of finance, fashion, and media that produces hyphenated tech companies.

In the first half, Gen Isayama who based in Silicon Valley will talk about the latest trends in U.S. including the affects of COVID-19 and what kind of startups are needed in each area, as well as the skills and mindset that Japanese startups need to compete in North America.

In the second half, Mr. Toru Tokushige, founder of Terra Motors Corporation and Terra Drone Corporation and globally expanding, will talk about how to select and attack the market and the tips on how to actually enter the market etc. that Japanese startups need to know.

Mr. Jon Shalowitz Silicon Valley Japan Platform President

Jon brings to SVJP a unique combination of Silicon Valley entrepreneurial and executive experience, coupled with his passion and commitment to the US-Japan relationship. Jon has been a successful serial CEO and entrepreneur in Silicon Valley during his career spanning more than 25 years. He has managed companies and organizations in cloud infrastructure software, security, and SaaS products. Many of these companies have had Japanese companies as partners and customers.
Early in his career he spent more than 5 years working in Japan in various roles at Toshiba and in management consulting. Jon is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Duke University and the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He was also an exchange student at Keio University.

Gen Isayama has extensive experience in venture capital, finance, and entrepreneurship. He founded World Innovation Lab (WiL) in 2013 to form a new innovation engine. Before WiL, Gen was Partner at DCM Ventures, specializing in online media, mobile, and consumer services. Gen is a technology columnist for the Nikkei’s digital edition, Nikkei Industrial Newspaper, and Toyo Keizai Online. He is a member of various Japanese government committees, including the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, and Internal Affairs and Communications to promote entrepreneurship nationwide.

Mr. Toru Tokushige Terra Motors Corporation, Terra Drone Corporation Founder and CEO

Founder and CEO of Terra Motors Corporation and Terra Drone Corporation. Born 1970 in Yamaguchi prefecture, he is a graduate of the Faculty of Engineering at Kyushu University.
After working on product and corporate planning at the former Sumitomo Marine & Fire Insurance Co., Ltd. (now Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Co. Ltd.), he graduated with an MBA from the Thunderbird School of Global Management at Arizona State University. He then moved on to investing in and providing hands-on support for startups in Silicon Valley.
Terra Motors Corporation, the electric motorcycles startup Tokushige established in April 2010, became the market leader in Japan within two years of its founding, while local Terra Motors subsidiaries were established in Vietnam, India, and Bangladesh. In 2016, he set up Terra Drone Corporation, a company focused mainly on using drones to provide surveying services. Tokushige is committed to building a Japanese “mega-startup” capable of winning in the global market.
