#4 Overseas Expansion Seminar

X-HUB TOKYO aims to support the global activities of startups in Tokyo and revitalize the city's economy through exchanges with overseas startups that are active in the global market. The Overseas Expansion Seminar, which consists of five sessions, targets startups aiming at overseas expansion and support organizations considering collaboration with overseas startups and will share (1) the characteristics of the ecosystem in each area and (2) know-how necessary for overseas expansion.

In the #4 Overseas Expansion Seminar, we focus on Silicon Valley, the world-largest startup mecca to uncover the unique characteristics the area has to offer. The speakers will provide insights on not only the current ecosystem of Silicon Valley, but also experience the entrepreneurship ecosystem first-hand and tips for successful business strategies for global business expansion.

We welcome not only startups, but also supporters and institutions to join us in this session!

Kenji is a Research Scholar in the Japan Program at the Asia-Pacific Institute at Stanford University and an International Research Fellow at the Cannon Institute for Global Studies.
Kenji is a graduate of Stanford University, where he majored in economics and East Asian studies. D. from the University of California, Berkeley, and has been in his current position since 2011.
His research and activities focus on: 1) Silicon Valley Ecosystem and Innovation, 2) Information Technology (IT) Innovation, 3) Transformation of Japan’s Political and Economic System, and 4) Political Economy of Fukushima Nuclear Disaster.

Yousuke Okada
ABEJA, Inc
Founder, CEO

Born in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture in 1988. Okada started programming at the age of ten. Majored in CG at high school and won the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award in the All Japan High School Design Competition. As a university student, he presented his CG-related research at a number of international conferences. In September 2012, after working at an IT startup company, he founded ABEJA, Inc., which specializes in implementing AI solutions in society. In 2017, with other board members, he co-founded the Japan Deep Learning Association, which aims to improve Japan’s industrial competitiveness by AI and deep learning technology, where he currently serves as a board member. From October 2019, he is also the CEO of ABEJA Technologies, Inc., ABEJA’s subsidiary in Silicon Valley in the US.

Roland is a Principal at 500 Global investing in and advising companies for the global fund and San Francisco – based flagship accelerator program. He is a serial entrepreneur having spent nearly 2 decades founding and leading products for companies in the web hosting, software development, and customer service spaces.

Ayumi Ode

Ayumi leads 500 Global’s efforts related to corporate innovation and startup ecosystem development in Japan. She has nearly 10 years of experience working directly with founder CEOs at both a startup specialized in cloud services as the CEO’s right-hand woman and an educational startup as its first full-time employee.
